For many years, the largest currency denomination in Costa Rica was the 10,000 colon bank note (billete). At today�s�exchange�rate, that is a bit over $18.00. �Thus, carrying just the equivalent of $1,000 required you to carry FIFTY-FIVE �10,000 colon notes� quite �a wad.

That will soon change as the Costa Rica Central Bank, Banco Central de Costa Rica, does a complete do-over of the country�s national currency.

Changes to all bills (including the existing currency!) are drastic. Changes will include not only the standard anti-counterfeiting�techniques�standard on the Euro and the new US bank notes, but also two new denominations; the 20,000 and 50,000 colon bills. That is a Godsend! �Additionally, �the new bills will come in different widths� from 125 mm to 160 mm� truly�important�for the visually challenged.

One Less Way to Get Taken in Costa Rica

For those of you who have had the pleasure of being forced to use those orange airport (SJO only) taxis and thus overpaying for every trip, your time has arrived.

These taxis have had a monopoly at the San Jose airport for many years, and for many years, they have had free reign to overcharge visitors to Costa Rica. �I say visitors as most of us who live here know the rates are just over the top and we arrange other transportation. �The news today is that they will probably be gone in 90 days.

Over the years, I have given two hints to folks traveling here: First, NEVER use the currency exchange inside the San Jose airport and second, avoid using those orange taxis. The exchange rate offered inside the airport is just ridiculous and you will lose 15% to 20% over exchange rates offered elsewhere.

As for those airport taxis?

Taxis here are required to use the meter, called �la maria� �for all fares. �Most do, and if they do not, they will if you ask (and point to the meter).

The issue with the airport taxis is that for many years, they did not even have them installed. Now, most do� but they never use them even if you ask! Instead, you must go to the dispatcher�s window at international arrivals and pay the flat rate from the list of locations. Those rates are almost ALWAYS higher than the metered rates� often 2,000 � 4,000 colones more. �It is also not uncommon for the driver to add �other charges�.

The regulatory agency here has given the airport taxis ninety days to clear out. �Now, they may appeal this, but it appears this is not likely� so that market will now open up and hopefully be more fair to tourists.

As a side note, these taxis were not permitted to provide service to anyone other than at the airport. This meant that those taxis had to hightail it back to the airport for their next fare. �There are few of us who have traveled the Pan American highway (the�general canas or la pista) running between San Jose and the airport, who have not been passed by theses orange devils� often even forced to dangerously change lanes while an airport taxi flew by 30 � 50 KMH (20 � 40MPH) over the speed limit. �I will NOT miss that.

One Way Airline Tickets to Costa Rica

I was preparing another of those �My Readers Write� posts that I do every so often, and this topic came up� again. Maybe it is time to give it its own space as apparently it is not clear to some people.

The question is always something like this: �I have heard I cannot fly to Costs Rica using a one-way ticket.�

My answer is, as always, �No, you can NOT unless you are a citizen of Costa Rica or have in your possession a valid and current residency ID card (cedula) proving that you live here. If you try, you will almost assuredly not be permitted to board the plane. If you do make it on board, you may well get caught at THIS end by immigration. Airlines are required to verify that any person attempting to fly and using a one way ticket is, in fact, a legal resident of Costa Rica. Most airlines (read that as all) try to follow the procedure religiously as they are faced not only with large potential fines, but also for paying for the return flight for the passenger when he is refused entry in Costa Rica.

Now please, before you start composing your comment telling me that you, your friend, your friend�s girlfriend and her auntie, etc flew here on a one-way ticket with no issue, please remember my �job� on this blog and in the RCR Web Site is to deal with facts, not luck or urban legend.

Read on if you wish!

First? What is the big deal? �Why require a round trip ticket for non residents?

Simple! �Like most countries, including the USA, (and actually many grandparents entertaining their grandkids), Costa Rica wants you to come and visit� and then go home.

In my various companies and in the various work I do, I come in constant contact with folks wanting to move here, moving here, returning here, etc. as well as numerous tourists. �I see this refusal thing at least once per month! �Further, I see a lot of folks refused entry who do not have at least six months remaining on their passports before it expires.

The most recent example was last week when two friends (ages 75+), flying US Air, were refused passage at the Phoenix airport. They were required to buy return tickets (at the last minute attractive price of $1,100.00) in order to continue their flight. They were told they could easily get a refund in Costa Rica losing only $50.00 cancellation fee for each ticket. �As a side, that did not go well. �US Air apparently is only open in downtown San Jose one day per week, and cancellations cannot be made at the San Jose airport. �Oh well. �They actually knew this, but forgot in the rush of moving and packing and all the last minute crappola involved in relocating to Costa Rica.

Anyway, while you might get lucky and NOT get stopped, the inconvenience, possibility of missing your flight/connections, maybe not having big $$$ for that last minute return flight, not to mention trying to get your money back� well it is just not worth the risk.

Before you fly here:

1. Make SURE you have a least six months remaining before your passport expires. they may let it pass with only ninety days, but I do not recommend taking the chance.

and

2. If trying to use a one way ticket, remember that you must prove that you are a legal resident or citizen of Costa Rica. That does NOT mean that you have applied for or are in process of obtaining residency. �It means you have that ID card in your grubby little hand!

Need Elective Surgery? Consider Heading South

Want a smaller nose and smoother skin? Need a new smile but can’t afford hefty dental bills at home? Well, move over, L.A.; Latin America is taking over as the world’s new plastic surgery mecca.

Over a million Americans travel abroad every year to seek medical treatment, most for elective procedures. Latin America offers patients affordable elective and non-elective medical and dental procedures, usually at one third to half the cost of the same procedure in the United States or Europe. As the name implies, medical tourism allows patients to combine medical treatment with a relaxing, tropical vacation south of the border; in fact, most medical tourism packages include excursions to nearby attractions and guided sight-seeing tours.

Many Pigeon Forge Cabin Rentals Are Near Golf Courses

One of the most popular parts of the town of Pigeon Forge is that it is home to a variety of golf courses. These are all great places for anyone staying in a cabin in the area to see. They are golf courses that come in many forms.

There are around twenty different golf courses in and around the area. These can be found in places that are right in the heart of The Smoky Mountains as well as areas that are about twenty minutes from the town. These are places that can be easily reached from cabins through trolley or car services.

Here is a look at some of the courses that are closer to the town. The Gatlinburg Golf Course is a course that is located right in the middle of Pigeon Forge. This is despite the course having the name of another town in it. The Gatlinburg Golf Course is near Route 441 on Dollywood Lane.

The Eagle's Landing Golf Club is about eight miles from the central part of town. The course is due north of Pigeon Forge in nearby Sevierville. It is a par-72 course that has been open for business since 1994. The Bermuda grass used around the course is beautiful to look at in the summer.

The Gatlinburg Golf Course is one of the top golf courses to see. This eighteen-hole par-71 course was designed by William Langford and was renovated in recent years. The course features holes that come in a variety of forms. The twelfth hole is by far the most famous of these holes. It is a 194-yard par-3 hole that drops in elevation by two hundred feet as it goes along.

The Bent Creek Golf Village is one of the top courses around the Smoky Mountains area. It is a course that is located off of US-321. It is around ten miles from Pigeon Forge. The course is a par-72 course that was designed by golf legend Gary Player. The back nine holes are around some mountainous areas while the front nine are in valleys. These are all beautiful places for golf holes to be in.

Ten Negatives (In my Opinion) of Living in Latin America

I’ve been living between Bogota and Panama City for the last three years, and for the most part, it’s been a fantastic experience — so fantastic, in fact, that I’ve only been back to the States a couple times in the last few years. But there are times when I get nostalgic for the motherland and can’t help thinking to myself, “This would never happen in America!” Yes, these moments of desperation are few and far between, but they do exist. So here it is, my list of the top ten negatives of living in Latin America, in no particular order:

1.) Unsolicited advice and nosiness. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve left the house feeling great only to be greeted by people — often people I barely know — telling me about some great weight loss pill or program I could really benefit from. Or that I’d really look better as a blond, that I’m wearing the wrong kind of jeans and that my career choice is all wrong. In Latin America, you can expect unsolicited advice on a relatively frequent basis. And you may find your neighbors are a little more involved than they are back home. Some call it human warmth, others call it nosiness, but whatever you want to call it, accept the fact that people, whether they know you or not, often have no qualms about asking you how much you make, why you’re dating the guy you’re dating, how much your purse cost, et cetera. Often, refusing to answers means getting labeled as cold and rude. Or in the best case scenario, a weird foreigner.

2.) Children living at home until they’re 40. This might not bother you if you’re a retiree living abroad — and it does go to show that families in Latin America tend to be close — but as a 25 year-old single woman living in Bogota, it’s never been my romantic fantasy to date a 30-year old guy living still living at home and with no imminent plans of moving out any time soon. I completely understand that wages are lower in Latin America and cultural differences mean it’s normal for kids to stay home until they get married, but being American, I have a hard time getting excited about a guy who goes home to mom’s everyday for lunch.

3.) Inefficiency. Anyone who’s ever tried applying for a business visa or gone through any other legal or immigration process in Latin America knows what I’m talking about. Person A sends you to person B who sends you back to person A who then sends you off to some remote office to talk to person C who then tells you your papers are all wrong and you’ll have to start the process all over. It can be exasperating, so mentally prepare yourself for a long and arduous paperwork journey.

4.) Men thinking catcalls involving the word “gordita” are somehow flattering. Imagine walking down the street in the United States and a construction worker yelling out “Hey fatty, looking good today!” And said construction worker grinning like he’s just given you the best compliment ever. Now imagine that happening every day. I have to admit these catcalls have grown on me a little, as some are particularly creative and inspired, but overall, being compared to one of Botero’s paintings on a frequent basis does not bode well for one’s self esteem.

5.) Deadly fear of the common cold. In the U.S., I usually caught at least one or two colds every winter. However, during my time in Latin America, I’ve realized that people seem to fear the common cold like people in the United States might fear Ebola or Mad Cow Disease. In Bogota, a cold often involves multiple doctor visits, exaggerated scarf usage and serious pneumonia fears. My grandmother (who is Colombian) cannot comprehend that I would go outside in a short sleeve shirt without a jacket or scarf, never mind that it’s a balmy 75 degrees outside.

6.) Pollution. Unless you decide to live in the countryside, pollution will become a part of your daily life. I’ve gotten used to stepping outside and a potent aroma of diesel, fried goodness, perfume and cigarette smoke filling my lungs. In fact, this smell has become so associated with Latin America in my mind that whenever I go back home and happen to catch a momentary whiff, I’m filled with a sense of nostalgic longing and am instantly transported back to Panama City or Bogota. But as a former suburbanite used to crisp, fresh air, it took me a while to get accustomed to the smog. And get used to people honking their horns for sport.

7.) The cult of beauty. So this might not be a negative if you’re a guy, but as a girl, it can get tiring. My grandmother often says she doesn’t understand how women in the United States go out in sweatpants and disheveled ponytails. She thinks everyone in the U.S. walks around looking a mess. As a woman who used to thoroughly enjoy sweatpants and disheveled ponytails, I’ve had to change my ways. Here, it seems that women are expected to get their hair and nails done at least once a week, hit the gym to fix any slight problem areas (or head to the plastic surgeon if the gym doesn’t do it), and rarely go out looking anything less than perfect. For example, take the gym: While I’m sweating profusely and looking definitively unsexy in my baggy sweats and t-shirt, the woman next to me is looking great in form-fitting spandex and casually running 6.5 miles an hour, not a hair out of place. I can’t compete with that kind of perfection. Now, I’m not saying all women strive to look perfect ALL the time, but beauty is definitely a bigger priority, at least in Colombia, than back home. And foreign guys will have to abandon the shorts and flip-flops unless they want to be the perpetual gringo.

Aparhotel Vista Pacifico Hotel Review

Probably the best place to stay for the money in Costa Rica. Charm, hospitality and the quintessential “PURA VIDA”

Things totally started off on the right foot pre-arrival to this cozy boutique inn. My wife was having trouble getting her VISA (Colombians need a VISA to travel to Costa Rica) and I urgently called Jan and Greg so they could send me the hotel confirmation with my wife’s name on it. They sent it over in a flash. I also asked Jan to if she could drop into town and pick up some flowers to be left in our room (delivered). Jan showed us our room and with a warm smile told us she decided to upgrade us to a bigger suite free of charge.

Unfortunately it was a short stay at Aparhotel Vista Pacifico, but I highly recommend this place for a quiet stay just 5 minutes driving from downtown Jaco. It has a quaint quinta-like feel and sits atop a hill overlooking the pacific ocean. It’s not a stuffy hotel, but more like your second home in Costa Rica. We hit duty free on the way in and the balcony was the perfect place to unwind after a long day of traveling with a bottle (or 2) of vino. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable. It had a kitchen, fridge, stove, silverware, glasses and pretty much anything you need.

In the morning, I woke up to fresh fruit, tasty pastries, coffee and yogurt with granola. Jan sat with us going over a map pointing out different beaches or places to checkout during our way down the pacific coast to Manuel Antonio. She has the vibe of someone that truly cares about leaving a positive impression on you and that’s exactly what happens. I would definitely go back and regret that we couldn’t stay longer.

The hotel is a bit of a walk into downtown, but you can take a 5 minute cab ride (we had a car so we drove). I actually preferred to not be smack in the middle of the main strip because it was much more tranquilo. People often ask me what motivated me to leave the U.S. for Colombia. Most of the time, the askers are Colombians themselves, many of whom would do pretty much anything to get a visa to the U.S. or Canada and can’t understand why someone would willingly choose to move to the “disaster” (their words not mine) that is Latin America. And I do sometimes ask myself, what kind of person abandons the comforts and stability of the developed world for the relative chaos of the third world? Many of the Colombians and Latin Americans I’ve met along the way even look at me like I’m crazy when I tell them I actually like living here. But Latin America does have its perks, otherwise, why would hundreds of thousands of foreigners leave their old lives behind to come live down here? Below are some of the most common reasons expats have given me for deciding to move to Latin America.

A lower cost of living. The cost of living in Latin America is often a fraction of what it is in the United States, Canada and Europe. I hesitate to call this a positive because the price of this lower cost of living is often an exploited, underappreciated workforce, but it’s hard to deny that this is one of the top reasons foreigners decide to move south. Basically, you can have a higher quality of life here for less. You can live comfortably in most Latin American cities with $1,500-$3,000 a month. In Bogota, you can get your nails done for $3.50-$5, you can have a daily maid who cooks and cleans for the equivalent of $300 a month and a good meal at a high-end restaurant will rarely cost you more than $15 . Plus, you can rent yourself a decent two-bedroom apartment for $400 a month.

Nature. In one word, nature in Latin America is spectacular. Unlike the U.S. where you have to drive at least a few hundred miles to notice any significant temperature or geographical changes, climate and vegetation changes by altitude rather than latitude here. In two hours, you can go from freezing snowcapped mountains to sweltering, tropical lowlands. Whether you want beaches, jungles, plains or mountains, it’s usually just a short drive away.

A happening party scene. I don’t think I’m being subjective when I say Latin Americans know how to party. In fact, I’ve talked to a lot of expats who decided to move down here exclusively for the party life. Whether you’re into salsa, rock, techno, heavy metal or hip-hop, most mid-sized cities have something for everyone. Renting a car and driving in Costa Rica

Traveling by car is the best way to see a country. You can stop when you want…pop into that road side grub station if your heart or stomach desires and take any route you want.

This is my seventh trip to Costa Rica., but only the second trip where I have had my own car. The last time I drove most of the country, but it was almost a decade ago. I was pleased to see some new highways on the pacific coast. Costa Rica is one of the top destinations for tourism, but 10 years ago, Guatemala’s or Belize’s roads seemed to be in better shape. On the Pacific, things have apparently changed and we were able to speed down to Manuel Antonio rather quickly on the toll road. You can even pay the toll with USD dollars, but they give change in Colones at a pretty weak exchange rate.

We did have a bit of a snag at the car rental place. I had made my online reservation and received an email confirmation that told me I had to pay at the airport car rental. Just past immigration I walked into Budget and handed over my confirmation number. The agent couldn’t find it in the system. He made a few calls and reassured me that he would get the SUV that I had reserved. We filled out a form and everything seemed to be set. He handed me a receipt with some scribbles on it and as we walked out I realized that I didn’t have a total price on my receipt. My confirmation from the Budget website had been $140 for 3 days including taxes and liability insurance. I went back and asked the agent how much I was paying and he pulled out a calculator and started negotiating the price. Having received a quote prior to my arrival I told him that I wanted to pay the price I was quoted for on the website. He then told me that his system was down and that I could discuss it with the agent where I was to pick up my car. 20 minutes later the bus came and picked us up.

When we arrived to the car rental I spoke with the manager and he reassured me that he would hold the price that was on my confirmation. When we looked at the receipt it showed that I was being charged almost double from the first agent. The manager wrote over the old prices with the price I had expected to pay.

Having lived in Latin America for close to 1/3 of my life I can say that this is not the first time I have been given the “Gringo price”. The lesson here is to double check things, bring receipts and pay attention whether your renting a car, signing up for a tour or taking a cab

Cops Won’t Enforce New Transit Law

I have been waiting patiently for many months for someone in the government of Costa Rica (ummm – that would be the diputados), to realize just how idiotic is the new ley de tránsito (traffic law) that goes into effect tomorrow, March 1, 2010.

In fact I have re-written this post about 3 times, the last time being Friday when they decided not to enforce some laws requiring everyone carry fire extinguishers, those reflective triangle thingies, and a couple of other items (like child seats) that they probably should have left in! I was running out of time… but my guardian angel told me to wait until Sunday…

So I did wait, only to learn last night that the least likely group of all (that would be the transit police officers union) voted overwhelmingly to not enforce the new laws, but will enforce really tough drunk driving laws and those regarding reckless driving! Sadly, those are the laws the courts are ignoring with only eleven convictions in over a year. I am thinking now that the police officers (that would be the group with the brains) should perhaps trade places with the diputados!

Sometimes Costa Rica is kinda like that old fairy tale about the king has no clothes. Everyone sees something is not going to work well, but they plunge ahead. Oh… yeah! I guess the USA is about the same, with pols trying to force the stupid, hugely expensive. and almost universally hated Obamacare, down the throats of voters who already know how dumb it is… HA! And you thought Costa Rica was a better option! But I digress!

So immediately, the transit chief starts making noises (probably correctly) that officers who do not enforce these new laws will be derelict in their duties. The diputados, not to be outdone by management, join in the hue and cry for enforcement. Should be interesting!

OK, so what is the big deal and why won’t the new laws work?

Basically, they are overkill. Costa Rica drivers are arguably the world’s worst. I have driven in a lot of countries, but drivers here just scare me to death. Therefore, new laws are a good idea… right?

Yeah… unless you make the fines so large that they can come close to the salary of the police office whose job it is to enforce them.

Oh… and before I begin, there is also a point system. Once you get 50 points, you lose your license for two years.

I have often found that the best hosts leave some information about local amenities and attractions: convenience stores, shopping, restaurants, post office, launderette, useful phone numbers and a map etc. Even if I haven't met the owner, it has made the stay easier and I have remembered the touch.

One Way Airline Tickets to Costa Rica

The question is always something like this: “I have heard I cannot fly to Costs Rica using a one-way ticket.”

My answer is, as always, “No, you can NOT unless you are a citizen of Costa Rica or have in your possession a valid and current residency ID card (cedula) proving that you live here. If you try, you will almost assuredly not be permitted to board the plane. If you do make it on board, you may well get caught at THIS end by immigration. Airlines are required to verify that any person attempting to fly and using a one way ticket is, in fact, a legal resident of Costa Rica. Most airlines (read that as all) try to follow the procedure religiously as they are faced not only with large potential fines, but also for paying for the return flight for the passenger when he is refused entry in Costa Rica.

Now please, before you start composing your comment telling me that you, your friend, your friend’s girlfriend and her auntie, etc flew here on a one-way ticket with no issue, please remember my “job” on this blog and in the RCR Web Site is to deal with facts, not luck or urban legend.

Read on if you wish!

First? What is the big deal? Why require a round trip ticket for non residents?

Simple! Like most countries, including the USA, (and actually many grandparents entertaining their grandkids), Costa Rica wants you to come and visit… and then go home.

In my various companies and in the various work I do, I come in constant contact with folks wanting to move here, moving here, returning here, etc. as well as numerous tourists. I see this refusal thing at least once per month! Further, I see a lot of folks refused entry who do not have at least six months remaining on their passports before it expires.

The most recent example was last week when two friends (ages 75+), flying US Air, were refused passage at the Phoenix airport. They were required to buy return tickets (at the last minute attractive price of $1,100.00) in order to continue their flight. They were told they could easily get a refund in Costa Rica losing only $50.00 cancellation fee for each ticket. As a side, that did not go well. US Air apparently is only open in downtown San Jose one day per week, and cancellations cannot be made at the San Jose airport. Oh well. They actually knew this, but forgot in the rush of moving and packing and all the last minute crappola involved in relocating to Costa Rica.

Anyway, while you might get lucky and NOT get stopped, the inconvenience, possibility of missing your flight/connections, maybe not having big $$$ for that last minute return flight, not to mention trying to get your money back… well it is just not worth the risk.

Before you fly here:

1. Make SURE you have a least six months remaining before your passport expires. they may let it pass with only ninety days, but I do not recommend taking the chance.

and

2. If trying to use a one way ticket, remember that you must prove that you are a legal resident or citizen of Costa Rica. That does NOT mean that you have applied for or are in process of obtaining residency. It means you have that ID card in your grubby little hand!

The Road To Caldera

This trip is not cheap, and by Costa Rica toll standards, it is a fortune. There are three toll booths (peajes) en route, The first and third are 490 colones each and the second is 640 colones. This is a bit under $3.00, cheap by most US standards, but huge by Costa Rica standards. Still, with gas prices at ridiculous levels and the time saving, I am guessing this is not going to deter anyone.

I picked yesterday as I thought that many Ticos might choose to hang around their homes in preparation for today’s presidential elections. Lucky guess!

Road conditions

The road is in beautiful shape as you might expect from something two weeks old. It is generally two lanes wide (one in each direction) though it widens to an additional lane going uphill (for use in passing slow traffic). Now saying that, Costa Rica drivers may be the worst drivers in the world. Patience is a word few Ticos (and some really dumb tourists) understand when behind the wheel of a car. Illegal passing on all highways (autopistas) is a primary cause of many incredibly violent and needless accidents every week.

Ley de tránsito – Results Day One

Typical of Costa Rica, news reports differ as to how went day one following implementation of the new ley de tránsito (traffic laws). One English language online stated that more than 300 fines were handed out in San José alone. This was kinda amazing as the transit officers union stated in pretty clear terms that their membership would not be handing out tickets except for violations that could be dangerous to other drivers.

I normally only read La Nacion or some other Spanish language newspapers as they tend to get it right… and as I suspected, the information reported was not quite accurate. The actual number of tickets was far less. By 4 PM yesterday, 218 tickets had been handed out nationwide.

One Less Way to Get Taken in Costa Rica

I had a red taxi try to rip me off. He tried to charge me $225 to go to Atenas from the airport.

I told him to take $25 and to get lost

Another trip I took an orange taxi that charged $25.

Let the buyer beware …

So what is the fare price from SJO to the capital San Jose for example?
Tourists still pay what they are asked to pay, you cannot argue if you don’t know local rates.
But one certain company, let it be monopoly or whatever, is always the sure bet, in any foreign country.
Will be visiting CR in few weeks, we’ll see how it works.

I have travelled to and from downtown San Jose 6 times now and the rate was always the same over the last 3 years…$25.00. Knowing what it is like to drive in San Jose without street signs, crazy oneway roads, slums, the Pan Am, I was happy to pay the $25. Recently to get approximately the same distance in Calgary AB from my friends to the Airport cost me $50 with a meter. I agree with Paul M. and Lisa to most Hostels/Hotels in San Jose near Central Park is $25 US dollars. Oh and PS I have yet to take cab that uses his meter…it is always a flat rate and the challenge is to find the regular “flat rate” and keep the driver honest. Ask before you get in.

And… as I mentioned… you overpaid by $5.00 to $10.00, and THAT was my point. You had no options. Those of us who live here know to use the “other” not so public services available as you leave the airport.

I think the extra fare for the airport taxis gives a security. I’m from CR, however I would recomend take the airport taxis, just for safety.

For what it’s worth to your readers…
We found out in December that, if you are insured by INS, INS is now paying for taxis to and from the airport. We have an email from our insurance agent with the info – in Spanish. Friends of ours have taken advantage of it and love not having to drive themselves or haggle with the taxi drivers.

On my first visit to CR I arranged for someone from the hostel to pick me up from the airport. He was supposed to be standing outside the airport with the name of the hostel on a sign. Unfortunately he was late. A “helpful” taxi driver outside accosted me and I explained I was waiting for the hostel driver. So he offered to call the hostel and check on the delay. He called and told me that they had just left the airport with another guest and it would be about an hour before returning to the airport. And of course he offered to take me to the hostel instead. Don’t remember the fare proffered, but I turned him down and called a friend in Heredia. While waiting for my friend, the hostel driver arrived and said no one ever called the hostel and he hadn’t picked up anyone from the airport earlier that day. So the taxista was just a big liar.

TRY A BUS. After my initial experience with taxistas at the airport, I resolved to find alternate ways to get to San Jose from the airport. My best discovery was that there is a bus stop on the other side of the parking garage from the terminal. From this stop, buses will take you to downtown San Jose, about 8 blocks west of the Teatro Nacional. Of course if you have several pieces of luggage this may not be a viable option, but usually I have just a duffel bag and overnight case and I hug them closely during the ride into San Jose. The bus fare was about $1US.

Many tourists burn themselves when reachnig the beaches.

Try not to tan yourself the first 1-2 days. Use sun blocker with more then 10-15 in protection and if you stay in the sea or ina pool for prolonged times, wear a t-shirt the first days.

This will allow you body to "get the feel" for the sun and you will see how your skin reacts.

Also remember the burn-spots,

The bridge of your nose
Ontop of your shoulders
The top of your head (with little or no hair)
Your feet

The sun rapidly raise to be almost straight up in the sky. Thats why you burn on body parts, facing the sky and not straight forward or backwards as in countries further from the ekvator.

Also buy special treatments for skinburns.

Almost everyone will need them sometime!

When you burn, try to cool the burned areas down with special products, ice or even cold showers and keep the area humid (do not let it dry out).

And most important of all, keep it out of the sun until it calms down.

So things like a t-shirt, covered shoes, a hat when you first reach the beach may help you enjoy the rest of your vacation.

Most visitors stay in San José when they visit Costa Rica.

But they always want to visit the beaches!

Some things to consider when you plan a trip to the beach.

The speed limit is quite low in Costa Rica
The big roads are few in number
The traffic is high, all day long
There are a lot of heavy traffic, trucks, buses and similar
There are almost no speicla places where you can pass heavy vehicles
The average speed is much lower then you think
Your trip will take more time then you anticipate

Talk with the locals, they will give time estimates that will be more correct then just reading the distance from a map and calculating with the speed limits.

Normally, calculate with a 50-75% time addition to the time "it should have taken".

Also be carefull when dricing as there are a lot of "killer drivers" trying to pass cars at any place.

You'll be better of giving them space and stay behind a truck, then fight with all the local drivers when they try to get up ahead in line.

Close to Playa Conchal and Playa Brasilito can you find playa flamingo.

Its THE place for sportsfishing around these parts of the coast, and it is still not completely comercialised.

The sand is kinda brownish and not one of the prettiest beaches.

But this part of the country is a must visit if you're looking for beaches, as you can walk from one to another.

Playas de Coco.

One of the most visited beaches in Costa Rica.

The town is very small and has not seen large scale tourism until lately.

New condos, houses and hotels can be found everywhere.

The core of the town is still quite unchanged, but further out in the outskirts of thw town, new stores, malls, restaurants and shops pops up almost every other week.

To find a more tranquil place to swim in playas de coco, avoid the beach i the center of the town and turn right some 2-300 meters before you reach the beach. You can go up to 1-2km on this road and find many nice small roads leading directly to the beach. But this far away from the center of the town will you hardly find any people at all.

The beach itself is not very spectacular, its more like a run of the mill beach with a lot of leafs and other garbage all over the beach.

This is not only from people not cleaning after themselves, but from the sometimes quite rough waves, throwing garbage onto the beach.

As always in Costa Rica, know the tides before you jump into the sea. The tides are quite strong in most places and can give you and your family a lot of problems if ignored.
